âWhy does it seem like weâve done this before?â Alex asked her brother.
âProbably because we have.â
âI have to say I never thought Iâd see the day Edmond would sign over Technologie Applique.â
Jonathan Krause nodded.
âYou did?â
âI donât know. I wonder what heâs doing it now. Jimâs off on some mission he didnât share with anyone. Edmond wants to retire. No one retires from what we do, Alex. Even when we try to walk away, we get sucked back inside the beast. Those two? They never walked away. Iâm as sure of that as I am of anything in my life. And now? Pytor wants Edmond outâpermanently? I donât like it.â
âDo you think they know more than theyâve told us?â Alex asked. âJima and Edmond?â
âDonât you? I donât know what to think. We both know the Collaborative splintered into factions.â
âYeah.â
âWhat?â Krause asked.
âI donât know. Part of me wonders if itâs not all coming back together.â
Krause nodded.
âYou, too?â
âIt makes sense. Many people benefited from the Cold War and all the little hot wars they created to line their pockets. Ones that carried little risk. Have you told Candace everything?â he asked.
âEverything I know. Yes. Something is different. I feel it,â Alex said. âCandace, Kellerâthey arenât playing their roles as someone hoped.â
âNo one in our world wants idealists in power, Alex.â
âI donât think Candace is an idealist.â
âSeriously?â
âI donât. She had ideals. Which I will grant you is a rarity. But sheâs pragmatic about them. Itâs not as if sheâs out to shake the foundations of the world order.â
âMaybe not. Sheâd like to shift it. Sheâs already begun. Candace Reid believes people should have power. Not that the people in power should remain in control. We both know thatâs not a popular approach. Sheâs coloring outside the lines, Alex. Keller, too. Theyâre not beholden to the machine.â
Alex sighed.
âDo you disagree?â Krause asked.
âNo. Isnât that what we agreed to do? Tear apart old machine piece by piece?â Alex asked.
âWe did. We also knew what that would entail. Neither of us could anticipate a president who wanted the same thing. Maybe not for the same reasons. Itâs changed the posture of the people weâve been attempting to expose. Theyâre not about to play it safe. That presents us with opportunities.â
âBut it also presents a danger.â
Krause agreed. âThereâs no way men like Gregorovich will allow sanctions and restrictions to tug at their purse strings. You know it. I know it. And they arenât about to lie back and let democracy flourish. No way. People are coloring too far outside the traditional lines. I donât know who is at the helm, Alex. Maybe there isnât one someone. But Iâm as sure as ever that the Collaborative is retaking shape. It might call itself something new or nothing at all. There is a structure to whatâs behind the latest events. A structure that hasnât existed sinceââ
âSince Jim killed the admiral.â
âYes. I know you donât want to hear this. But I think you need to hear it. Candace has stepped into the same place as John.
